THE PROJECT:
Serving a community of over 65,000 people, University Hospital is a 317-bed acute and specialty care hospital located in Tamarac, Florida. With more than a dozen varied healthcare programs and services, University Hospital is deeply committed to providing quality, compassionate, patient-centered care.

THE CHALLENGE:
Faced with a roof nearing the end of its lifespan, University Hospital had major concerns about the integrity of their building envelope. They needed a roof that could meet stringent Florida building codes, hold up against heavy foot traffic and weather the harsh climate. In addition, providing a clean, safe environment with minimal operational impact on hospital patients, visitors and staff was paramount.

Due to our positive working relationship with HCA Hospitals and the proven performance of our APP modified bitumen systems, management turned to DERBIGUM for a durable, long-term waterproofing solution.

THE SOLUTION:
University Hospital first received a layer of DerbibaseUltra, to serve as protective base ply. The roof was then insulated using Derbiboard because of it’s high R-values and thermal efficiency. Derbiboard Tapered was also used to achieve areas of positive drainage. Next, a coverboard was installed to maximize the roof’s performance by providing an additional layer of protection, fire resistance and increased wind uplift values. Each layer was applied using DERBIGUM’s low-VOC Permastic Cold Adhesive. This provided safer working conditions, reduced jobsite noise and less disruption to building occupants.

Like all DERBIGUM systems, a minimum of two membrane layers were installed using DerbibaseUltra (120 mil) and Derbicolor P-FR (161 mil). Besides adding a full layer of waterproofing, system reduncancy doubles the protection against punctures and leaks. Both membranes are reinforced with polyester and fiberglass mat for greater tensile strength and dimensional stability. To top it off, Derbicolor P-FR’s granule surfacing provided an extra layer of defense against heat, UV rays and roof traffic.

Construction began in August 2018 and was completed in January 2019. The project took longer than expected, due to early weather delays. The temperature flexibility of DERBIGUM’s Permastic cold adhesive allowed for longer work days to quickly get the project back on track. As you can see, the roof had extensive equipment and complex flashing details. Our DAC’s high attention to detail and diligence working closely with our technical team made University Hospital’s re-roof a success.
